Nafplio is one of the most beautiful cities of the Argolic land - the first capital of the newly established Greek state, built according to the mythology by Nafplion, son of Poseidon and Danaida. The Venetians’ "Naples of the East" is the city that will enchant you. We suggest you visit the old town of Nafplio, stroll through its alleys and start a journey into the modern history of Greece. Well preserved neoclassical and Venetian buildings, imposing churches and corners with bougainvilleas give you a hint for what you will see. In one of the most central areas of the city there is the “Syntagma Square”, which is surrounded by historical buildings: the old Trianon mosque, the Venetian stone warehouse of 1713, where today is housed the Archaeological Museum, the National Bank building, built in the interwar period.
At the surrounding streets, you will discover the first Hellenic Parliament, the church of Agios Spyridon, outside of which the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was murdered in 1831 and opposite to it the only hammam of the city. It is also worth visiting the church of Agios Georgios, which the Venetians painted with frescoes and replica works of great painters such as the Last Supper of the Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. Two more squares – “Three Admirals” and “Filellinon” -, also have interesting monuments and manor houses that you can see around them. Walk in the alleys with the bougainvilleas of Yialos neighborhood and have a look at the small shops on the "Great Road”. Finally, a walk to the picturesque neighborhood of Psaromachalas with the colorful house windows will complete the unique mosaic of the feelings and the experiences you get from Nafplio.
